We took a trip to Cortez, Colorado last weekend for our grandson's High School graduation. We left on Wednesday and took I-70 to Grand Junction. For those of you that are not familiar with Colorado: to get to Grand Junction by way of I-70 you go through the Eisenhower Tunnel (about 11,000 feet). Then you drive over Vail Pass (10,666 feet) and on through Glenwood Canyon. The canyon was preserved by building bridges and tunnels and not blasting to widen the canyon. It is a very beautiful canyon.

We visited a friend in Grand Junction and then went on South to Cortez by way of State Highway 141. The Dolores River Canyon was very pretty and most notable was the remains of a water flume hung on the side of the canyon for 5 miles to bring water up out of the canyon. It amazes me how this was done back in the 1800s. We also stopped in Gateway to tour a car museum owned by the owner of the Discovery Channel.

Our grandson also races stock cars and was racing over the weekend. He finished his car about 15 minutes before he arrived at his graduation party. We watched him race Friday and Saturday night. Friday he didn't do very well. He got a little too rough (probably to impress "Grandpa") and got into a wreck and hit the wall. He worked all day Saturday to get it fixed so that he could race again Saturday night. He did a little better Saturday night; he won his heat race. In the main,he was in 4th place on the last lap until another car hit him and he spun out (not his fault this time!)

We came home on Sunday by way of US-160 to US-285 and home. That route took us over Wolfcreek Pass (10,850 feet). Our entire trip took us over 3 major passes and 5 or 6 smaller passes. The bus did fine and we saw some beautiful country.

I did the Eisenhower Tunnel back in 82, traveling from Oregon to Snowmass Colorado for the Worldwide Austin Healey Meet. I drove my 60 Bug Eye Sprite up and over the mountains and through the tunnel. She did pretty good considering it was powered by an 1100 cc British motor. You should have seen the look on my face when an 18 wheeler was bearing down on me going down the mountain, talk about pucker factor! It is definitely a road to be travelled.

Glad to hear you had a good trip and your Grandson graduated and got to race his car! Kinda neat!

Wow Wayne, those are some great pictures! I bet that was something passing through those tunnels. I wonder if it was as scary as going over the high bridge we passed over in Jacksonville, FL on our way to SC?

Congratulations on your grandson's graduation! I know you are proud of him. What a great reason to get that Eagle out on the road. And who knows, maybe someday he'll make it into NASCAR, and then KY Steve and I will follow you to all the races.

It was two tears ago for us when little pauly came along,he is our first grand baby,and now we are proud to present our first grandaughter,born yesterday@4:15 pm EST.


We now have visions of bussin across the country for the graduations,foot ball meets,car race's,etc to be there for them.I have never felt so much pride as I am feeling right now.New Vigor for an ol'dog aye!what a great day it has been ,Really!

Congratulations Cheryl and Van hope Mom and Baby are all doing fine. Van be prepared for what is about to happen to you (has happened to me twice). Granddauters have a way of completely taking over a Granddad's life, and it is all good.

Congratulations Cheryl and Van. I second what Wayne said, I have two granddaughters and a 4 month old grandson. They all are wonderful and I can't imagine life without our grandchildren.

The other day, Emily our 4 year old granddaughter, was sitting on the couch and told me she wanted to color her hair. I asked what color would you like it to be? She said... blue, I want it blue. I told her blue was a very nice color, but I did not think she would look good in blue. She then said...how about green? I said green is also a very nice color, but then you would blend in with the grass to much. Then without hesitation she said...well, just make it gray like yours grandpa.

Now I will be the first to admit that I have some gray hair, but I certainly did not think it was the dominant color...yet. Emily does not see what I see or I refuse to see what she see's.

Anyway Van, as a grandpa, you have some great times to look forward to because kids say the darndest things.

I used to pull the jake (with straight pipes) about halfway thru, really rattles the walls, and of course, drives the tourists nuts. I hear they frown on stuff like that. In my private auto I used to honk the horn, the only known test to ascertain if you are truly a jerk or not .... Do not blow car horn in trouble ... You blow the horn.

Same thing with wet paint signs, what can I say. You have a nice looking coach, I am envious.
