I'm leaking quite a bit of oil coming from the top of my 318 screaming jimmy thats running down on everything. It's in a 1965 model 01. I haven't pulled the bedroom floor up yet and as you all know it's not easy to see anything on top of the engine in an 01.
My question for anyone on this thread is what could be leaking that much oil on top of of the 8V71?
Any insight before I tear in would be great.
Thanks, Jim Marin

Don Fairchild says blower oil tube. He's gone to get the Detroit book to show me what he means. If you need me to, I can scan a diagram from the book to show you if there is one.

Re: Leaking oil on top of 8v71
1. This is the blower oil tube. Don says most likely this is it. It is located at the rear of the blower. You should be able to see it once you get the floor panel up. There are o-rings here that can get broken. Your oil tube will probably be a little longer than this. This picture is a 12V71 because that is what I had most convenient.
2. This is a rubber seal that connects the rear of the blower to the rear housing. Don said this is not as likely but might be it as well.
We are assuming that you think it is the rear of the engine. There are a couple of places in the front where it might be leaking but you would probably have already spotted those just by looking into the engine compartment.
If both of these look good let me know and I can take more pictures of other probable spots.

Re: Leaking oil on top of 8v71
If it appears to be coming from the top rear area, Don is probably right on. The rubber blower drive boot, or the oil tube or fittings. If it is coming from lower in the rear of the engine it could be the rear engine plate gasket or flywheel housing gasket is washed out. On old engines oil could sling off one of the gears and eventually wash out the gasket. There is a slinger guard that can be installed to prohibit this.
Good luck. Hard to get in there to see, much less to steam clean.

Thanks guy's, You were right . I replaced the blower oil line and she's fine now. No leaks! ( well at least at the top. I still have some minor leaking that I can try to find now).
Thanks, Jim

I've been following this thread because I am thinking my tube is leaking also. This board is invaluable!
