Yep I learned that you can not leave your house battries unwrapped when it get's 22 below. I went out today to checked the condition of the bus before I go out for 15 day's. Well Iam here to tell you what frozen battries look like. It aint pretty. all six of my house battries where froze, split still holding a charge but there toast. So takeing your battries out and storing them is not such a bad idea. Iam wrapping my starting battries , they did not freeze. Anyway that's my lession for today . Hope all you Eagle fans heading south have a great time, Be safe and God's speed

Lesson #2 for the day:

If at all possible, do not live where it gets -22 degrees!

Hi Andy. Sorry to hear about the batteries.

I know you already know this, but if they are in a charged state, they will not freeze.

When you get new batteries, keep a trickle charger on them and you will be fine.

Hey Jim , Your so right, I thought I had enough juice with my solar panels but when the -22 hit I was in the oil patch and I was trying to keep me warm. Well the good new's is I learned a good lesson ,and now I will just replace them with two as we don't do much boon docking, and I will keep the old girl pluged in the rest of the winter. 8-)

Hey Andy, I know how you can stop your batts from freezing! Move to Texas, if it gets that cold it will be in the 60's the next day!

Hi Andy. I am not sure what batteries you are considering, but give some thought to getting some decent capacity.

One of the biggest disappointment in my conversion so far is not having enough battery capacity. I have 8 golf cart batteries and that sounds like a lot, but we have a house fridge and lots of electronic stuff and we can only go one day without running the generator.

Think about the Quartzsite rally. No cord to plug into. You will be several days off the grid. Some folks say they will just run the generator, but that is not a nice thing to do during quite times :( .

For most folks, 8 golf cart batteries are enough and the used to be in the $60 range at Sam's. I suspect they are higher now, but lead is down again, so maybe they are still less than $80.

It is not good to mix old and new batteries, so you should think about biting the bullet and gettin a good capacity now.

Just some thoughts.

Jim

Good food for thought Jim , I know what you mean about runninig the gen. I have 6 golf cart battries now ,or at least I did . So before the Ennis mt rally I will be looking for some Battries to replace the frosted one's. Thanks again
