Hello,

We have just had a mechanical 6v92 rebuilt resulting from an oil filter collapse. It is in a GM Eagle with a remote oil filter base. Cannot find the cause of the collapse so looking for answers. Detroit Diesel is stumped!

I wish I could help you with your query but it is beyond my experience. We have lots of folks here with plenty of experience though that might be able to offer some scenarios.

In the meantime, we would love to see some pictures of your bus. Where are you located?

Off-hand taking a "swag" at a possibility, the only experience I've had with a filter collapse (other than the obvious plugged filter), was a defective check valve in some of the after market filter housings or a hunk of silicone from the pan gasket that was sucked into the oil intake.

If you want to diagnose it, you'll probably end-up pulling the lines and pushing with compression or pulling with vacuum (my preference is pushing with compression); if you do this, you'll have to pull the oil pump

If you've had the engine rebuilt and still have the problem, then the problem might be most likely with an ancillary part not directly associated with the engine (such as the filter housing or a line degradation).

Good luck--and don't fire it without oil pressure. . .

Thank you for your response. Detroit Diesel is going to install new 1" oil lines to a new oil filter base, remove the oil pan and checking or replacing relief valves for debris. They will be doing this when it gets alittle warmer in Wis., so it probably won't be done until March or April. We have it in storage and they don't want me to drive it, so they have to come to us. Will let you know what happens.

OK, Dennis is not getting much help here.

I have no experience here, but I have slept in a Holiday Inn Express

I did a google search using "oil filter" + collapse (include the quotes and +) and found several hits. I did not spend a bunch of time, but the following two seem to have some information:

Seems like the common issue is bypass valve. I don't know if DD filters have/need a bypass valve, or if one is built into the oil filter housing. In any case, that would seem to be a place to start.

I hope you still have the filter and can double check to make sure it is the correct filter for the application (and a quality filter). I would contact the manufacturer and see what they have to say.

Some of the sites mention a stuck pressure valve in the oil pump (too high of pressure) and clogged filter.

If you have the filter, make sure to do a good inspection of the filter and contamination. I would be tempted to take some of the material and see if an oil analysis company could do something with the material left in the filter.

Please keep us informed what you find.

As someone mentioned, don't run the engine until you find a probable cause.
