Hi Bill.

Most folks go with the Cummins M11/ISM. Good engine and folks are quite pleased. If you make it to Quartzsite, there will be at least two of these conversions, perhaps more.

Thanks Jim, How hard would it be to raise the floor in a completed coach for a 60 series??? Would an ISX work??? What is a N14??? I have found many of the engines in question and no ISM engines. I found a complete truck with a 14 liter detroit for 10,000.00. I just want to make sure I buy what will work.

Hi Bill. Folks have put all of the big engines in an Eagle. The issues are length, and height. For the Series 60 you have to raise the bed area several inches (I raised mine 13"). That does not screw up the bedroom too bad, and makes a nice way to get to the engine. However, you need to build a truss for the floor support and then reinforce the cross member and cut out quite a bit of the original cross member. I show quite a bit of the work on my project pages listed below.

If the bus is not converted, it is not a huge deal. If it is converted, you will need to tear most everything out.

The length is real touchy. Most of that depends on the transmission you choose. You really do not want the HT740 because of gearing (1:1 in high gear). It is longer than both the AutoShift and the World transmission. With the AutoShift, I was able to use the original driveshaft and have about 2 inches clearance on the rear bumper.

Re gearing: even with a 3:36 (about $3-4K to change from a 3.73) you are not really geared very well with an HT740 (or any of the Allison transmissions with 1:1 high gear). That will put you about 1900 rpm at 72 MPH or a bit less than 1700 at 64 MPH. My opinion is that is too fast for the large 4 stroke engines who have a sweet spot of 1300 - 1500 RPM.

There was a wrecking yard in Ogden, UT that was scrapping a bunch of ISM/AutoShift trucks a couple of years ago. For reference (and a fun site) go to Brian Diehl's engine swap page (MCI, but similar): http://home.earthlink.net/~diehls0792_1 ... ion10.html

Bill, If your bed is in the middle raising the floor is no big deal. I did not do my 05. the people that did it cut the rear frame and did not replace it with any thing. I do not recomend this how ever I have not seen any movment in the rear of the bus. See you at Quartzsite and I will show you how mine was done

Good Luck Wayne

Hi Bill

I posted the following on the MAK board on July 20, 2006

>>>>>>>MAK post>>>>>

I am still on my way back from BusN USA.

I got to Ogden a little early (pick up Pat tonight from her convention) and decided to go to a truck wrecking yard to look for a part. Found a truck with an AutoShift and had to ask what he wanted for it. He said $3500 for the complete package plus some sort of core (HT740 was OK with him). I think that is a pretty good price.

Now, for the good news (and just what you engine conversion wantabes need)!!

He has 22 trucks coming in with ISM 400 HP/AutoShift combinations!! As most of you know, the ISM can go in an Eagle (and perhaps other buses) with no need to raise the bed. These would make a heck of a conversion. He said that if the person wants it all, he will sell the truck less the rear ends. That would give you most everything you need for the conversion. Didn’t ask price.

This is where Brian Diehl got his engine and transmission.

I just called them and the sets that they got are gone. However, he does have a few of the Autoshifts available and one ISM engine out of a trash truck (roll off) 280K miles.

If you are interested, give them a call. They are great folks. I would bet that they would be able to find other ISM engines as well.

Bill, the Cat C-11 or C-9 engine will fit into your Eagle with very little modifactions to floor and is far better than the M11 or any of the I series Cummins. The floor will need work for the C-13 and C-15 but I like the C-15 good luck

Clifford, did Sonnie pay you to make that post? ;)

I would suspect that that engine would be a good alternative to the ISM. I have seen several M11/ISM installations, but have not see the small Cat engine in an Eagle (or other bus).

If anyone has that installation, I would love to know details of the installation and have a few pictures. I collect information on engine conversions and would love to add this option to my collection.

I have to ask about the availability of the Cat C11. You see a lot of class 8 trucks with the M11/ISM, but I have not heard much about the C11 (my opinion is that the C9 might be a bit short of capacity of a truck or bus).

UPDATE: Ok, I did some research, and found several references to C11s in class 8 trucks. I found this link that has quite a bit of information on the C11 (for industrial application, but should pertain): http://www.zeppelin.com/ps_dnld/c11_ACERT_E-Rating.pdf

For comparison, here is a spec sheet for a Series 60: http://www.fdda.com/uploads/documents/29.pdf

I am still trying to find the dimensional specs for the ISM
