Called Sonnie again this morning to clarify the parking brake issue.

He said that he went to install the cage bolts in the spring can and the spring was compressed (no need for the cage bolt). That would suggest that the diaphragms that holds the springs compressed have air pressure (even thought the tanks have no pressure according to the gauge). That would suggest that a valve (or check valve) is somehow keeping pressure on the cans even though the system has lost pressure.

I guess that would make sense with what Clifford said the second valve was for. However, Sonnie has played with combinations of the valve settings and nothing seemed to make the parking brakes work.

Sonnie has very poor internet connection at his location, so I am relaying the information to him.

Instead of trying to re-write the manual. Here's the link I found. I think page 24 & 27 talks about PP-3 and PP-8 and the rest of the family.

Usually twin valves are used so that one has to be held down for a period of time in order to release. It's not like the PP-1

Anyway, good reading.

The 2 valves on the NJT one was for brakes and the other interlocked others things like the steps, doors I think it was even tied to the starter anyway Sonnie got it going he just plugged the one valve so the air would exhaust and set the brakes.

good luck

If the engine is all the way back, does that mean that it doesn't have room for an 8V or a 60? Is the solution to lengthen the back end? Is there another option? Just wondering...
Dave, even a Model 10 (or 05 or 01) doesn't have room for a 60 without some rebuilding of the rear of the bus.
Copy that Dale.

With the two valve set up, did you still have to stab the brake pedal to release them like I do on my 15? just curious, as I don't have a manual(wish I did)to search through.

Van, next time you come over I'll show you how to plumb the system were there is no need to hit the pedal.

itd be nice to not step on the pedal, but that big WHOOSH of air right before you pull away sure is pretty music.

Clifford that'd be super! Thanks :D I have always hated having to apply the pedal to release the brakes, a useful safety feature at one point during it's life as a revenue bus I am sure, but just a pain in the u no what!LOL

Little harder for you John your bus unless someone converted it over you have DD3 parking brakes.
Van has spring parking brakes with a dual air system.

good luck
