Eagles Email Tail of Woe

Post by beltguy »

Hi folks.  What follows can be described as minutia.  That said it is documentation of a workaround for GoDaddy's elimination of what was a simple free email service.  They have since mandated the use of Microsoft 365 email which is a paid subscription.

James Polsfuss who has helped me a bit over the past couple of years did a workaround and was able to let us use a "backdoor" free email version. on GoDaddy.  It appears that GoDaddy has closed that option and I have not been receiving Eagle email for the past few days.  I am sure James could find a way to pull the rabbit out of the hat again, but our free ride will end sometime (if not now).

We do not get enough legitimate email to justify paying the yearly "ransom" fee for Microsoft email, so I did a workaround that seems to be working. Before I describe that effort, Let me talk about two different kinds of email.  The first is mainly for business where the user wants his website to be the suffix of the address (ours was jim@eaglesinternational.net).  In general, you have to pay for that option.  The second type of email is what I will call general public email - such as gmail, yahoo, etc.  There you get an address like jim@gmail.com.  That works for most folks and the systems are great.

One of the great features of gmail and yahoo mail is that you can get your email anywhere on any computer.  The same is true for Microsoft email.  However, I never found an easy way to get my Eagle's email on multiple computers.

So, my workaround was to set up a free public gmail account (eaglesinternationaemail@gmail.com).  I then took advantage of GoDaddy's email forwarding service (free) and forwarded the jim@eaglesinternational.net email to the gmail account.  That way, anybody that has my old email address (and the one shown in my signature) can use it and it will go to our gmail account.

Well darn

If you type jim@eaglesinternation.net in a mail server, the forward works just fine.  However, if you click on an email link like the one in the announcement block or my signature it does not work.  I tried looking at the issue, but I am burned out (several hours today).

May get back to in a day or three.

Well, I have given up on the GoDaddy forward service and now list the gmail address directly in both the announcement block and my signature.  There is still an issue:  a link does not seem to work, so you must type it or copy and paste and correct the format to ......@gmail.com

eaglesinternational.email at gmail.com

Sorry for all the issues - wish GoDaddy would not have gone over to the "dark side" with Microsoft.

Hi David

Yes, I mis-typed the email address in the first post of this thread.  Unfortunately, I just tested what used to be the correct address (jim@eaglesinternational.net) and it is dead (l or no l {grin}).

Also frustrating to me is that  I have to post the new email address as "eaglesinternational.email at gmail.com" and let the person sending the email correct the "at" to "@" because a link with the correct full address seems to send the person to never never land.

Oh what fun.
