John, I don't think I can call myself a machinist, I like to mess around with the mill and lathe. I can say it would be hard to do the things I do without them. I hope I never have to move them but if I do I will make sure I call you.

Thank You Wayne

Post 11 Entry Door Hinge
With the help of Kentucky Steve I went about building my entry door hinges. I like the hidden hinge that Steve built. I used his design with a few modifications. I wanted internal springs to slow the door down at the end when all the way open. Also a way to hold the door open. This part is not done as I have to finish the frame around the hinge to hold that part of the hinge. I milled the hinge out of a solid block of aluminum. I milled a place in each end of the hinge for a roller bearing and a race for a thrust bearing. I used a rotary table to mill the hinges to get a true radius. I milled the door mounting plate seperate and then bolted them together. Those two pieces will also be welded together. The half of the hinge that mounts to the frame of the bus was milled from a block of steel. I then added the angled piece that holds the spring to that part of the hinge. The springs are held in place with screws. I mounted a sheet metal piece to the hinge where the spring contact the hinge to protect the aluminum. A 1/2 inch steel plate is mounted to the door mounting plate so the door can be welded to the hinge. The aluminum mounting plate has oversized holes so the door can be adjusted if need be. The frame side of the hinge was welded to the frame in two stages.First , clamped to the bench so it will stay straight I welded the two hinges together with 1 1/2 tubing between them. When I milled the hinge pieces the end were milled to fit inside the 1 1/2 tubing. The second stage was to weld that assembly to the bus frame. There will be a later post about the mechanism that holds the door open and the door itself. I am trying to come up with a latch for the upper part of the door. The thing I am struggling with is how to open both the upper and lower latch with the same handle. If you have any ideas please let me know.
