I really like your stories, but the pictures of your coach are very impressive! Maybe in the next life ours will look so good! ;) I hope you bring her to TBR 2010 this year so I can drool over it! :D

One more thing, can you take a picture of how your hitch is mounted? I have one and need to mount it on ours and would like to know how it's attached to the frame.

Thanks Paul, started a project thread here, hope this is the right place?

Thanks Paul, much like an old bulldog with a bone, we just sort of keep chewing on it. Hopefully one of these days we will have a nice old hoopie, not a show stopper, but what I like to refer to as “good enuff.” Last year we reupholstered all the seats into leather and put in a new wood floor, added a small dinette set and some other goodies.

This winter we have incorporated some more changes mainly in the area of lighting and what knot. We now have all red interior running lites for when we travel after dark, these are located inside the coach and they illuminate the interior from driver’s area all the way to the back bedroom.

Fabricated and added six new bathroom lights and that area is a lot brighter now. We are considering a new paint job as this paint is extremely old, chipped and flaking, and it is time for something new and exciting, most importantly, getting rid of the goat!

Most recent improvement would be the new Firestone tires all the way around and the 23rd it goes into the shop for two brand new heat pump air (rooftop models). All total we have five air conditioning units and these are the last two to be replaced and/or serviced. Then it will get some mechanical work (air bags-Jake brake-set the rack) and some other stuff before making the Custer City Black Hills meet in July.

Right now I am relegated to short hops, y’know, get out and impress the locals, stuff like that. Lubricates the seals, helps to quench my wanderlust gene, and keeps me relatively sane.

Here are four shots of the hitch that you requested:
Image

We have a two receiver hitch with seven way connectors on both sides. Don’t ask me why two? It was on there when I took it home from the pound. We use the hitch on the passenger side, when we pull our Chevrolet HHR-LT.

Image

The red item above the hitch is a marker/brake light setup. Four markers below the bumper when rolling, and when stopping all 6 illuminate. Stainless steel cowbell for added ambiance. (Yuk-Yuk) The frame shots are not all that good, best I could do on short notice.

See you in the fast lane …

Thanks for posting that Don! Now it gives me more to chew over and get it right! I think the idea of the double hitch is a good one, I'm sure it makes it easier to see the toad when rolling down the interstate.

I will have to modify the hitch I bought to make it work, but that is not a problem. It will do a much better and safer job than what is on there.

Wow, Lights and more lights. I like the idea of being seen when braking, good setup!

Now we need to see more pictures of your coach! ;)

Hey Wayne and Paul, thanks I appreciate it.

Moving to the country last year, was one of the best things that we have ever done, getting out of the city was almost tantamount to “life saving” for us.

Image

As with all things, there were tradeoffs, and one of them was the bus. It was only six miles from the house in storage, but now we found it some 33 miles away from our new rural location. So we more or less went “all in” (cashed in everything we could find, held three garage sales, took from Peter to pay Paul) and built our shop.

It is close to 3,000 square feet, cost a little over $18 a square foot to erect, and finished out, came in for about $25 per sq ft. It has a 10X30 drivers lounge inside and the rest is devoted to the tractor and the bus.
Image

If I just had your tool collection Wayne, I would be set up just fine.

Image

Last month found me crawling around on the floor like some kind of reptile doing floor sanding. I never did locate a bigger sander, but then again, all I have is time ……. Right?

Image

We started the shop in August signed off on it on Oct 5th and the past few months have been a lot of carpentry work, construction and painting, it is good to finally find myself at the end of this long row I have chosen to hoe. Things are just now beginning to look up.

This month it is all about 90% finished and I can sit back, drink a cup of coffee, and dream up but one more impossible scheme or device to keep me amused and/or entertained.

Often not an easy thing to do.

Our Eagles Nest

Two things that have always bugged me about our coach is the goat on the back and on the front and rear were two cheesy little signs that read: “Our Eagles Nest.” The goat is painted on and it cannot be removed easily but the other two, were made of a vinyl material, and came off with a heat gun, some solvent, and a lot of elbow grease.

I mean really, “who paints a goat on the back of an Eagle?” So one mini-project this winter was removing some of this and making a few small improvements in the area of marker lights and headlights. First this stuff had to come off.

Image

The material was kind of turquoise color in the beginning. One pass later and it sort of cleared up, one product I used for removing this sort of stuff that works well is called “Goof Off.” Most hardware stores carrying it, works great on bumper stickers, labels, etc, etc. Also used a fair amount of acetone.

Image

After the first pass and one or two razor blades it started to slowly come off. You can use the wife’s hair dryer, but believe me, it is best to pick up your OWN heat gun and save the grief.

Image

After about thirty minutes it was starting to look a little cleaner.

Image

Clean slate a totally new look and a whole lot better.

Image

The next thing to hit the trash bin were old style round headlights they went the way of other things too. They didn’t put out much light and the appearance dated the coach, so out with the old and in with the new. Sealed beams. Updated headlights give it an '89 model look.

Image

In the end we still kept the name, just transferred it to the shop. Late into the night, I sit and I think about what to do with the ##$#!!@#**#! goat? I am leaning towards a light grey background and some kind of lettering …. THIS SPACE FOR RENT … under that … See driver for details. Yeah, that might work.

Have a great weekend … See you in the fast lane

With all the hard work, she looks great!

I also have some lettering on the front bumper. I'm going to leave it because is just says "Eagle". It still looks OK, and it makes it easier to find it if I get lost!

I like the front look, very clean and modern!

Wow, nice shop! You've done an amazing job with it!

Heat guns really are the way to go when taking stickers or skin off of anything. I used to use them when I mixed paint to do various experiments in the down time and they'll do anything from taking off old paint to melting the cheese on your sandwich to melting the skin off your body. Very handy tool to have!

I want to see the goat. Before you cover it or remove it take a picture cause I won't believe it until I see it.

I'd also love to see interior pictures. (my favorite part)

excellent work there! Keep it up!

Thanks, it has been a LOT OF WORK and is now just coming together, some awful long days out there in the cold, believe me. The goat is on the bottom of the page on "Reach Out And Bug Somebody" scroll on down to the bottom and you can see it there.

I will add interior shots as time allows.

Thanks for the comments folks.

It has been a long time reaching this point, but it appears to be coming together, some really long winter days out there, whipping all this into some kind of shape. You can see a picture of the goat on the bottom of the page entitled “Reach Out And Bug Somebody” a little article about tire shop adventures and cell phones.

Scroll on down to the bottom of the page and you will find it there. As time allows I will add photo’s of the interior of the coach.

Watch for our grand opening soon! Hahahahahahahahaha … Uh, I believe I just hurt myself.
