HELP-HELP-PLEASE-DOUBLE OIL COOLER ON A MODEL 10/6V92

Post by bob »

I developed an antifreeze leak in the double oil cooler. We tried to find where it was leaking and found we had to purchase the adapter plate. It had broken at an ear that attached to the block. A terrible job, pull radiator and all. Well, we bought all the gaskets and this adapter plate and put it back together. It now leaks where the top neck and the cooler connect. There is a donut like seal there that kind of wedges between the neck and the cooler, then there is a clamp around it. It leaked bad when we put it together and checked with some mechanics and they recommended some rubber adhesive from International. We spread it on as good as possible, thinking we had it sealed. This stuff is suppose to adhere to the hose and casting and make a gasket. Well, it didn't work and we are going to have to pull everything apart again. We think we are going to have to purchase the center housing of this cooler, probably $1000.00 or more, and the neck above and all the seals again. Has anyone had experience with this problem and could you give me your ideas or what you have actually done in this situation. Please Help: Thank You Bob munent3@yahoo.com

I am also wondering if there is a good aftermarket supply for these things. Detroit parts are really high but at least I know they will fit. Thanks Bob

Bob, it uses a v type seal make sure that is the one you were sold, the one with the double lip will not work.
Fwiw I never had one leak check the neck on the block it has to be removed to install the special clamp (a regular clamp will not work) and seal tighten the clamp and seal( do not over tighten) then bolt it to the block or cooler

No aftermarket parts for the oil cooler per say but you can buy the gaskets , clamps and seal aftermarket BTW you can buy a complete aftermarket overhaul set for a few bucks more than you paid for gaskets from Detroit just found that out on Jim Smith's double cooler a couple of weeks ago

good luck

Clifford

Clifford,

Thanks for your answer. This is a v shaped seal Part # 5102098 as listed on the breakdown from detroit 5/8 thick on outside edge and 2 15/16 diameter. It appears like a ring of rubber 5/8" wide in a circle and then a v shaped in the id that extends between the neck and housing. There is a clamp that goes around the rubber that forces it into the crack when tightened We didn't remove the neck because we were afraid of busting the bolts and it hadn't leaked there. You have evidently done these before. The neck on both the elbow and the cooler seemed a little pitted, but we didn't think it was more than what this rubber seal compressed would not fill. Also, you say a complete rebuild kit from an after market. What would this include and how would I contact them? Thanks again Bob

I have bought complete used double oil coolers before from Sam Caylor at Caylor Supply in Rantoul, Kansas. If it comes to that, give him a call, he really knows his business.

You can call Delaney & Alhf here in Bakersfield too. They have a lot of 2-strokes in their yard if you are looking for something used. They are a Detroit dealer so they have new stuff too. Talk to Dave, in parts.
