6V92 Loss of Power

Post by Sparky »

We just returned from our first trip since starting our conversion. And I have to say it was very neat when we got to Elkart IN we ran into 2 other Eagle owners. We told them both about this site so hopefully they will join in.

All went well with the exception of a few times durning the trip the engine seems to "hick up". That is the best way I can describe it. It seemed to be just after I would shift into the next gear and accelorate. Some times it would be for a spit second and some times it would last a few seconds. Then it seemed to recover and would be fine. It is almost like it is not getting enough fuel. I changed both fuel filters before we left. Also I had alot of trouble keeping up my speed on some of the hills in OH. I did not expect our bus to be a speed demon  but I have heard of people pulling trailers with our Eagles so when I could not keep up with traffic on these small hills in OH I can not imagine being able to pull anything. I am not sure where to look next. Does anyone have any ides. Thank you in advance. :)

Sparky, your hicups are caused by the fuel modulator being out of adjustment, have a tune up done on the rack and overhead and that 6v92 will preform with the 5 speed manual.Fuel modulators are design to keep the rack from instant response to keep the smoke down. They are not my favorite I like the smoke and power LOL good luck

Clifford, thanks for the help. I will get it in for a tune up. One last thing since I am not a mechanic by any means? What is the "Rack" ?

Sparky, the rack controls the injectors if not adjusted correctly one injector or more will not be in sync with the others causing slow response on the rpm on both the fast and the idle down. good luck

The rack is on a mechanical engine. Your engine could be a DDEC engine. Not sure if they started the DDEC engines as early as '88. If it is DDEC, that opens up a whole different set of possibilities.

If your buss has been sitting for a long time, you could have fuel issues in the tank (algae) and that could clog new filters pretty quickly. Since it happens only for short periods, it probably is not filters, but don't rule it out just because you changed them.

Jim, the DDEC 92's have a rack they are a mechanical injected engine
the electronics control the amount of fuel to be injected. The NJT 88 and 89 were the only Eagles I saw that using the DDEC system till 1990 or later could have been some others around. If he has a NJT model 20 it will be a ddec others were mechanical non electronic good luck

Clifford, I know that Art & Cindy's 1988 Model 15 is a DDEC. But DDEC still has a rack that must be set, doesn't it? I know the computer handles the pulses and stuff but you still have to get a basic adjustment, don't you?

Dale, Van's 89 is a MUI and so was Dave St 1990 model 15 I have both of those engines in my eye sight. You do have to run the rack , do the injector setting and valves ever so often just like a standard MUI engine.
your not wrong there
good luck
