LEDs for "puck" lights ?

Post by beltguy »

Many of us have the 3 inch puck lights that use halogen bulbs (10W or 15W). Those bulbs get darn hot and consume over 1 amp of current each.

On another group (Monaco) they started talking about G4 replacement bulbs. One fo the best sites was: http://www.ledlight.com/. They have several LED replacement bulbs. The two that seem to be best for large area would be items 35263 (6 element $12.99), 85529 (9 element $17.99), and 54334 (not rated by elements but said to be the light equivalent of a 30W halogen $19.99)

The issue I always struggle with is the Lumen ratings. It is very low as compared to the halogen bulb (see: http://www.lightingfx.com/item--LED-G4-Bulb--LEDG4).

We have a few halogen bulbs that have gone out and are thinking about trying the LEDs. The halogen bulbs are in the $5 range as I recall, so the difference is not huge and the LEDs would last a lot longer.

Have any of you played with these? Any thoughts on the huge difference in Lumen ratings (think I read somewhere that the rating does not work well for evaluating LEDs)?

Jim, I have 24V G4 halogens in my bus, both 10W and 20W depending on the location. I get the light assemblies and bulbs from Imtra Marine Products (www.imtra.com). The last bulb order I placed (11/07) the bulbs were $2.30 each. The prior order was 1.90. Have not checked lately because I stocked up last time. I am keeping a log of when I replace bulbs to try and see about how long they last. I like Imtra's products and service a lot. Like you, I would question the brightness of LED's but it sure would be nice to have them.

Also, for some dimly lit areas in various underfloor compartments I picked up some adjustable LED pucks that are powered by AAA batteries. I got them in a package of 4 at Costco. Very inexpensive and work great. They can either be screwed on or they have adhesive backing.

Mark. That is a great site. I see they have the halogen bulbs for less than $1.00 However, it looks like the G4 bulbs are over $20. I might not have been doing a correct search.
