Info on an 8v71 motor

Post by Kentucky Steve »

Guys, while I have this old motor in my garage I would like to familiarize myself with the workings of it. I have been looking for books on rebuilding it and have not come across anything on the two stroke motors. Do any of you know where I can get some good reference material on rebuilding it. Are there any "chilton" type books out there. I am not 100% sure I will be using it but, it seems a shame not to tear it down and at least study it since I have no knowledge of heavy duty motors. I know there must be some reading material out there somewhere.

Thanks
....Kentucky Steve......

Steve, Detroit Diesel publishes great manuals.

Do an Ebay search with the following: "Detroit Diesel manual". You will find lots of manuals. Right now there is one "buy it now" for a 2 CD factory manual that is listed for $7.99. Read it carefully, but it looks like the steal of the day (item 350146428794). Even if you don't rebuild the engine, you should have the manual for smaller repairs.

I have Detroit manuals for 6V92 and Series 60 and they are extremely detailed. These are the manuals you will find in factory DD dealers libraries.

Also, don't forget that Don Fairchild sells the parts you need. If you are going to rebuild, you should think about putting in turbo parts and making that engine a screamer.
