855 Cummins

855 Cummins

On my short list of Eagles to purchase is one with an 855 Big Cam Cummins. Anyone here have any experience with this engine? It is mated to an Allison 740 and a 3:36 rear. Any thoughts/opinions would be great.

Hey Steve hi, for me the bigger the better so far as I'm concerned,although I still have a 6-92 right now ,a big bang motor is definetly in the cards for my 15 later down the road. I'm positive those with more experience will chime in on this topic as well as those hopin like me .Good luck :D

Not a thing wrong with a 855 it has been around since 1957,Wayne on this board has a big cam and I don't think he has a problem with it.B&B in Vegas has used the 855 for years doing engine swaps and FWIW some 01 and 05 Eagles had the engine for OEM good luck

Steve As Clifford said I have a big cam 400 with a 740. I have 55000 on this motor. I have not had one bit of trouble or ever had to add any oil between oil changes. This motor is a work horse before fuel went up I would drive it within 200 RPM's of the governor all day long. The only draw back is it will smoke on cold mornings untill it warms up. I overcome this by using my aquahot to warm the motor before I fire her up. Does like fuel at 72 MPH I get about 5 at 65 I get 6 or a litttle better. Not sure what rear end I have someday I will figure it out.

wayne howdoes she pull up a steep grade and at aprox what speed? thanks ;)

Van We go over Wolf Creek Pass in southern Co. quite often. We pull a jeep wrangler. When I go up I but her in second and cruise on up. I could shift into third sometimes but chose to stay in second, I think that is eaiser on the bus than shifting all the time. I think that is about 35 MPH. The big Cam 400 is an indestructale motor (well almost) and there are a million of them out there. But I would give serious thought to an electrionic motor. The reason I used it is when I built the bus electronic motors were not that plentiful and I did not want a two stroker just the way I am.

Wayne,

Thanks for posting. I'm glad that you have had a good experience with your 855. I had a chance to meet up with the owner of that Eagle as he was heading south and while his bus is not the one for me it was really good to see that engine in person. Another Eagle that I am considering has an 8V-71 in it. What is your best guess on the cost of re-powering a model 5 with and 855?

If you end up going that route, let me know about the 8V71. That is my engine of choice and is what will go in my Eagle. Don and I are always looking to buy them.

Steve, you will save a lot of money by buying one that already has the swap that is not for the faint of heart doing a engine swap, no matter what you do it will still cost from 15 to 20 grand and a bunch of time. If you buy a 8v71 let Don upgrade it for you the 2 strokes will give you great service and fuel mileage if set up right.

So I guess the next question is, if I'm going to spend 20 grand what is the best engine out there to re-power an Eagle with? Personally I lean towards the inline 6 style motors for their fuel economy/power balance. I will not be doing the conversion myself, I'll leave that to someone who has done it before.
