Mile High Blues

Post by BoxcarOkie »

The wife sits next to me watching some mind numbing television (America Has David Hasslehoff) and I stare at Rusty’s coach and try and wish myself up in the rocks. Cloning myself in the spirit of “Somewhere In Time” and yearning to be in a different place in time.

There is a old line in a Glenn Campbell song, that goes something like this: “It’s knowing that the door is open, and my pathway is free to walk, that tends to keep my sleeping bag rolled up and stashed behind your couch.” I really like that tag in that song for some reason, one of those things that stick in your mind all day long. I am a vagabond fiend for the open road this day.

Often, I think about grabbing the bag and hitting the road. I don’t like being shut down, I want to get out and chase my wandering star. Today, right now, my wandering soul is stretching the limits of my sanity. I am thinking this evening of the mountains, of the hard climb west out of Denver, I-70 to the Bee Hive State.

It has been a long time since I saw the mountains, deep in my spirit, something is awakened. My mind drifts off to past days, the open road, cheap fuel, and a time I now perceive as being much better. Seem to be experiencing this longing to go to Mile High City again. Silently I pray; Lord, is this going to happen; am I to make a trip to Denver this year? I sure would like to go; it would be so nice to get out of here, if only for a short trip and a little while. Reality slaps me upside the head, and brings me back to the real world.

Can this even be possible given the economic conditions in this country right now? Just to get out on the highway for awhile and watch the plains roll by the window, and smell the country air, that would be such a kick or boost for my tired old spirit. Better than Prozac or Valium, a natural boost to clear my mind, sixth gear and seventy-five, high-ballin in overdrive.

Running the plains late at night, nothing but the moonlight and the growl of the Detroit to keep me company, even the truckers are strangely quiet. One more river to cross, one more mountain to climb, one more valley I gotta go thru, leaving my troubles behind. One more battle with the devil over my sin, I am going to walk with Jesus, and I am going to share my life with Him. Turn up the radio, roll down the window* and allow the wind to rush across my face, give me a moment or two, the opportunity to get out of this place.

I long for a two lane highway, after five in the afternoon, they are just about all mine. The farmers and the truckers have settled in for the day, and they leave it all to me. Even the plains of Kansas, endless and mostly devoid of trees, can be a welcome thing to a tired and ragged soul, looking for a watering hole for his spirit.

Once again, I am seeking the elusive prize in life. Denver after a trip across the wheat lands and prairies of Kansas shines like a jewel on the horizon. It calls to me like a lost lover in the dark after a summer dance … Summer time on the plains, wake up and smell the roses, air so thick with humidity you can cut it with a knife.

Hot weather is just around the corner, soon the youngin’s will be frolicking in the sprinkler, rain on the tin roof, backyard picnic’s and flies in the butter. Honeysuckle in the air and folks grilling meat on the grill. Legions of weekend warriors in the backyards of America will be suiting up for the game.

Not me, I want to be on the move.

With a modicum of luck, I will be out there on the highway, me and the old bus, roaring by searching for a cheap thrill, another paid for rush in life.

*This is of course fiction, everyone knows, you don’t roll down a window in an Eagle, you just grab it firmly most of the time, (mine usually requires some kind of screwdriver or prying device) and then you jerk it back!

Right now Wayne it appears that we have one, maybe two trips for the summer. First to Ohio to StarJet and a face lift for Daddy's Hobby (new paint job and Bondo refresher) and another to the Kansas Bus Meet in September. Might try and squeeze in the Texas meet as it is close and could be done on a weekend.

After that it is down to Houston to see the new grandbaby, then I-10 west to Tucson, up to Lake Havasu, Bullhead City and maybe out to visit our money in Las Vegas.

If we do make the Mile High, we will definitely call you.

One thing about this board, and that is the overwhelming generosity of its members, it is beyond compare.

Thanks. We have two acres south of the Interstate in El Reno (west of Okie City) and the same applies.

Thanks, I do get thru there on the way to my brothers in Illinois. I usually stop around there, I like to bypass OK City. I was there when the big explosion happened. I haven't done any traveling since fuel got out of control. I'm working on converting to veggie oil & solar.
For now I am taking care of my grandson while he recovers from chemo treatment for Lukemia.

Okie City like most big cities (750-1 million in population in the surrounding areas) is starting to get gridlock. We have our fair share of road rage, lousy attitudes, bad streets, and crawling traffic.

Cover me honey, I am changing lanes!

It is best to motor thru early before rush hour or afterwards, kind of like what I do in Kansas City or the Memphis area. If I get there and the time is not right, I lie low, eat a piece of pie, take a nap, and then do it later.

Old truckers trick.

Next time you come thru, give us a shout, we have plenty of room and we are not in the city we are out in the country, 4 miles south of the super slab.

Once again Songman, I don't know if this is in the right place or not? Feel free to move it anywhere you desire.

==================================================

Coming to a mailbox near you, more of my particular brand of madness. Hahahahahahaha. Look what I found in my email yesterday.

Don,

I sent you the following email on May 22. Perhaps it was never received. Regardless, I have read your work and would love to have your write for our magazine.

Here are some of the particulars:

a. We like to keep our stories no longer than 1,500 words. Of course, we can stretch and/or continue a story until the next month.
b. We like to augment our articles with photos. We need high resolutions shots to provide some publishing options and to meet our print media expectations.
c. Deadline: We need to receive your submission by the 1st of the month for publication in following month. (For example: June 1 is the deadline for our July issue).

If you already have something written, go ahead and send it in early.
Thank you very much. I look forward to reading your submission.

Chad

I sent them 1300 words this morning, it is entitled "Here's Your Sign" also asked for a link to sign up for the rag. I remember the last time I did this, I sent in a submission and a note to the editor that read: "Dear sir, here is my manuscript and story, please get back to me as soon as possible, as I have other irons in the fire."

Shortly thereafter I received a reply, it said: "Remove irons from the fire, and insert manuscript!"
