Heading to the KATY bike trail

Post by davida »

Leigh and I are heading to Bethany MO on Friday for a two week volunteer building job, then we are parking the bus in Washington MO, catching the Amtrak with our bikes and hitting the Katy trail at Sedalia. We will ride back to Washington over 5 days. (Note this is riding down the river, uh humm, as in mostly downhill) I'm making this "desirable" for Leigh. I've booked nice bed and breakfast rooms each night.

This is one of my "bucket list" adventures and I'm really excited about it. I can hardly wait.
Whhooo, whooo :D :D :D

Well, it didn't go as well as planned. We rode from Sedalia to Boonville the first day (32 miles). We only made it to Pilot Grove and had to hitch a ride with a local to Boonville. We made the segment from Boonville to Rocheport (13 miles) and my wife said, "we're done". We spent the night at a wonderful B&B in Rocheport (Amber House) and the owner gave us a ride to Jefferson City. We will catch the train back to Washington MO, get the truck, drive back to Rocheport, get the bikes, and finish our B&B stays in the other towns on the trail with the truck then head back to the bus in Washington on Friday.

We just don't have comfortable bikes and are not physically prepared for this, but the trail is excellent. I recommend a recumbent bicycle for old foggies like us. That was told to us by several our age who have done the trail.

Even though we are as sore as can be, this was a great experience in meeting some fine hospitable Missouri folks. We will remember this for a lifetime.
